Selenium is a cowrite from the 50/90 challenge in 2008. Though it started out as a cowrite with Scott Martin, it grew in scope to include suggestions by Elaine DiMassi, Hoopshank, and others I think. Hoopshank played drum and bass on this track, adding his parts to the original demo. It was a heady time, I remember feeling like I could write anything then, there were no limits. We came up with the idea in a group chat room and I sort of awarded Scott the prize of having to cowrite it with me, lol, after multiple jokes back and forth about dandruff and science and being nerds. I remember sending Scott a message after he'd sent the starter lyric that it already felt like an opus and might wind up being 8 minutes long. By the end it clocked in at an amazing 8:08, perhaps the longest song I've ever written and recorded. I also remember working in the garden in the backyard of our Fremont house as I worked on the song in my head, feeling my fingers in the dirt, planting flowers. Elaine commented later that it felt like an epic Moody Blues song, which made me laugh because I hadn't thought of that at all as were writing and recording it, but yes yes yes, that's exactly what it was.
This track above is the original track that i posted before Hoops added drums and bass. I recorded it without a click track because I didn’t know how to create a click in 3/4 or 6/8, and I remember realizing I couldn’t just piece it together, I would have to start with a complete vocal and acoustic guitar one-take before I could add any of the other parts I had in my head.
